Fall 2019 UHP Student Achievements
The fourth edition of the Live Ideas: Undergraduate Primary Texts Journal showcased work from five UHP students. Alissa Rehmert, English, published a poem titled “Academic Sublimity.” Natalie Wolf, English, published a poem called “Beginning with a Porch Swing, on a Cool Evening.” Olivia Rogers, Political Science, published an article called “Leadership Lessons with Aquinas and Machiavelli.” Kaylee Kipp, English, published a creative essay titled “Resistencia.” Suan Sonna, Philosophy, published a short story called “An Unfinished Story: Part II.” Live Ideas: Undergraduate Primary Texts Journal, Vol. 4
Rachel Duden, graduating senior in Secondary Education and Mathematics, was recognized as one of four recipients of a College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. College of Education honors eight future teachers for excellence.
Clara Wicoff, senior in agricultural economics, was named a Marshall Scholar for 2020. She becomes the 15th Kansas State University student to win this award. UK commission selects Kansas State University senior for 2020 Marshall Scholarship.
Claire Chaffin, junior in political science, and Scout Molder, freshman in political science and pre-law, won a delegation award at the 30th American Model UN Conference in Chicago. They also competed with a group of other students including Nathan Bothwell, junior in political science, pre-law and communication studies, Lily Colburn, junior in political science, Natalie Jabben, junior in political science, Alexa Scheer, freshman in political science, and Nicholas Kaechele, senior in political science and they won a position paper award. Model United Nations team wins awards at American Model UN.
Amber Berg, a master's student in Regional & Community Planning, was one of three recipients of the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellowship. Three APDesign students receive Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Graduate Fellowship.
Annaleigh Hobbs, sophomore in Marketing and Economics, received third place in the College of Business' Hallmark Case Competition. Hallmark Case Competition provides challenge for College of Business marketing students.
Kayla Craigmile, sophomore in Anthropology and International Studies, was one of the recipients the Joey Lee Garmon Undergraduate Scholarship for Social Justice. DMSA awards five students Joey Lee Garmon Scholarship.
Jessica Pennington, senior in Interior Design, was named the recipient of the inaugural Horizon Award from the International Interior Design Association Mid-America Chapter. Interior design student receives Horizon Award from professional organization.

Mary Carr, junior in Marketing, and Kathryn Hurd, junior in Mass Communications, were among six K-State students to receive a scholarship by the American Advertising Federation of Kansas City. K-State students receive scholarships from American Advertising Federation of Kansas City.
Kayla Craigmile, sophomore in Anthropology, has been awarded a $5,000 Gilman Scholarship for Fall 2019 study abroad in Greece. Two students receive Gilman Scholarship for study abroad experience.
Spring 2019 UHP Student Achievements
Alliana Mitchell, junior in Animal Science, earned first place in the undergraduate research competition at the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Austin, TX. K-State ASI Students Sweep National Undergraduate Research Competition.
Macy Davis, May 2019 Honors graduate in English Literature, has been awarded a Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship for the upcoming year. University's newest Phi Kappa Phi fellow dreams of being rural librarian leader.
Nathan Dowell was named 2019 national champion in impromptu speaking at the 2019 American Forensic Association Individual Events Tournament, and Ben Engle was one of two students honored with an All-American award by the Cross Examination Debate Association. Communication studies recognizes accomplishments of students and competitive teams.
Two UHP students were named 2019 Goldwater Scholars: Eriana Basgall, junior in biochemistry, and Gabrielle Phillips, senior in chemical engineering. Three undergraduate researchers selected as Goldwater scholars
Kathryn Hurd, junior in Mass Communications, is one of three K-Staters recognized by the American Advertising Federation Foundation in Kansas City for the 2019-20 year. Three JMC students awarded American Advertising Federation Foundation Scholarship.
Sarah Marek, senior in secondary education, German and Spanish, received a Fulbright award to teach English in Germany. Three Kansas State University students receive Fulbright awards to study/teach abroad.
Nathan Dowell, History and English Literature, and Nick Kaechele, Political Science and Chemical Engineering, have been awarded Swogger Scholarships to fund summer travel associated with their participation in the Primary Text Certificate program. Primary texts students receive Swogger Scholarship.
Jayden Meyer, agricultural economics, and Luke Ryan, agronomy, were members of the Kansas State University Crops Team that placed first nationally in April 2019. K-State team wins national crops and precision agriculture contests at NACTA event.
Hannah White, sophomore in biochemistry, was a member of the K-State Robotics Competition Team that won first place in Mercury Robotics Challenge held in Oklahoma in April 2019. Remote-control-focused robotics team wins international competition.
Katharine Kellogg, senior in chemical engineering, and David Alex Ortiz, junior in chemical engineering, were part of the ChemE Car team that won the 2019 Mid-America Regional American Institute of Chemical Engineers Conference. ChemE Car team brings home top prize from regional competition.
Two UHP students were honored for excellence. Miranda Moore, communication studies, political science and pre-law, received the Anderson Senior Award for Outstanding Academics. Rafael Garcia, mass communications, was awarded the Tony Jurich Community Commitment and Leadership Undergraduate Award. Alumni Association honors eight K-State students for excellence.

Macy Davis, english, published a collection of poems called "Building a Literary Home" which includes three poems: "Dear Jo," "The Learning Experience of Boys," and "'Welcome to Our Home,' $10 Admittance." Jacob Mikuls, finance, published an article titled "The Battle of Trenton." Suan Sonna, philosophy, was featured in an "Author Spotlight" interview. Rafael Garcia, senior in mass communications, is a recipient of a Robinson Family Multicultural Leadership Award for leaving a legacy of enhancing multicultural engagement at K-State. Alumni Association names Robinson Family Multicultural Leadership Award winners.
Lauren Ailslieger, sophomore in Open Option, has been awarded a national Critical Language Scholarship to participate in intensive Russian language study in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan during the summer of 2019. The February 2019 issue of the Live Ideas: Undergraduate Primary Texts Journal showcased the writing and art of three UHP students. Rachel Hermes, fine arts, created a copper etching titled "Overcome." Olivia Rogers, political science, wrote an article titled "Louisa May Alcott's Transcendentalism." Hanna Schreiber, secondary English, was invited to present her research poster, "Picture Books in the Secondary Classroom," at the National Association for Professional Development Schools. College of Education faculty, staff, and students present at national conference
In collaboration with Gloria Freeland, assistant professor in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Rafael Garcia, journalism and mass communications, was published in the winter 2018 issue of Grassroots Editor, the quarterly magazine of the International Society of Weekly Newspapers. Garcia and Freeland will also be presenting their published work "A case study of a rural Hispanic newspaper in the Midwest" at the annual Kansas Press Association convention in Topeka on Feb. 9.
