Fall 2018 UHP Student Achievements

Kelly Briggs, academic advisor and UHP College Coordinator for the College of Education, received a Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award. Briggs used the funding associated with the award to give a poster presentation at the NACADA International Conference in Dublin. Three K-Staters receive Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award

Rebecca Hunt, elementary education, received the Department of Education Teacher of Promise Award. Hunt is a member of Kappa Delta Pi education honorary and was a student representative on the College of Education Dean's Executive Committee. College of Education honors new graduates for scholarship, leadership and potential

In recognition of strong academic excellence, leadership, community service and other criteria as determined by donors, the agricultural economics department awarded the following UHP students with scholarships at the annual scholarship and awards banquet: Conner McCollum, Charles and Lois Nauheim Ag Econ Scholarship, Clara Wicoff, Leonard W. Schruben Agricultural Scholarship and the W. Dan and Lynn Weaver Scholarship, Kaitlyn Urban, CHS Foundation Scholarship, Kinsey Griffith, CHS Foundation Scholarship, Michelle Unruh, Gladwin A. Read Memorial Scholarship, Aubrey Wright, Gladwin A. Read Memorial Scholarship, Emily Zwick, David and Susan Barton Cooperative Leadership Scholarship, Gracie Danner, CHS Foundation Scholarship and the Gladwin A. Read Memorial Scholarship, and Sara Gammon, Gladwin A. Read Memorial Scholarship. Agricultural economics department awards more than $200,000 in scholarships at annual awards banquet

Emily Andrews, apparel and textiles, and Sarah Hansen, nutrition and health and dietetics, are both being recognized as outstanding seniors by the College of Human Ecology. They will be receiving Research and Creative Activity Awards at the annual Graduation Honors and Student Awards celebration. College of Human Ecology recognizes outstanding seniors

Grant Huslig, senior in chemical engineering, Alexa Wilden, senior in microbiology and pre-medicine, Ariana Cecil, junior in biology and pre-medicine, Robbie Small, sophomore in biochemistry, Seth Peery, senior in biochemistry and pre-medicine, Sarah Hansen, senior in nutrition and health, and dietetics, and Kyle Thompson, junior in nutritional sciences and pre-medicine, all received Cancer Research Awards from the Johnson Cancer Research Center Award program. Each student co-wrote a proposal with a faculty mentor associated with the center and the awardees will conduct research in their mentor's laboratories during the spring semester. Undergraduate students selected to join Kansas State University cancer research teams

Trace Salzbrenner, journalism and mass communications, was recognized as a semifinalist in the news feature category for his entry, "JMC Scholarships," at this year's South Central Broadcast Society competition. The competition was open to students participating in more than 30 university broadcast programs. JMC students are winners at South Central Broadcast Society competition

Eunice Lalunio, anthropology, with the support of the Mark Chapman Scholars Program, spent the summer in Drimolen, South Africa, where she participated in in surveying and excavating a 2-million-year-old paleo-cave. Lalunio was one of five undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences to receive a Chapman Scholarship. Chapman Scholarship recipients benefit from summer opportunities

Rachel Hermes, fine arts, is part of a group of six art students awarded undergraduate research scholarships from the College of Arts and Sciences.  Rachel will join an interdisciplinary team of nationally recognized artists, chemists and industry experts to study new printmaking technology. Six art students awarded undergraduate research scholarships to investigate new printmaking technology

 

Summer 2018 UHP Student Achievements

Alex Wakim, May 2018 Bachelor of Music and University Honors Program graduate, has earned a 2018 Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship. Wakim is receiving a $5,000 fellowship from the national collegiate honor society to study film music with a concentration in music theatre at New York University. Music composition graduate receives Phi Kappa Phi fellowship

AshLee Lattner, doctoral student in veterinary biomedical studies and University Honors Program graduate, was selected as a 2018 Seaboard American Royal scholar. Lattner will travel to Kansas City, Missouri, in September for the 119th American Royal, she will participate in tours, a PRCA Rodeo and other American Royal events. Veterinary graduate student selected as Seaboard American Royal scholar

 

Spring 2018 UHP Student Achievements 

Rafael Garcia, mass communications and Spanish translation, won the C. W. Gusewelle Journalism Scholarship. Garcia will return in fall 2018 as the editor-in-chief of the Collegian, a job he also had in the spring semester. Collegian opinion writer wins national contest; two others win Gusewelle scholarships

Bridgett Kelly, elementary education, was recognized by the college of education with an Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. College of Education honors new graduates

Jessica Hanson, animal sciences and industry, won a scholarship for her outstanding poster presentation at the spring 2018 Animal Science and Industry Undergraduate Research Symposium. Hanson's poster presentation was titled "Effects of replacing soybean meal with dried distillers grain with solubles in a Boer goat diet."

Four UHP students were recognized by the division of biology for outstanding achievements. Sarah Hansen, microbiology; Hallie Lucas, biology and natural resources and environmental science; and Alexa Wilden, microbiology; received most promising student awards. Vaithish Velazhahan, senior in microbiology, medical biochemistry and pre-medicine, received the 2018 H.H. Haymaker Award for Excellence. 

Celeste Bartels, management and marketing, earned the College of Business Administration's Outstanding Senior Award. The award is presented each semester to a graduating senior who has made notable contributions to the college. Celeste Bartles earns College of Business Administration's Outstanding Senior Award

Eunice Lalunio, anthropology, and Jael Whitney, marketing, where recognized for the exceptional undergraduate research at the fifth annual Kirmser Undergraduate Research Awards. Lalunio received honorable mention in the individual non-freshman research category for "Dmanisi: A Study of Species Hypotheses and Hominid Variability." Whitney received honorable mention in the individual non-freshman research category for "Big Food, Big Problems: The Ethical Implications of Nestlé's Impact on Public Health in Brazil." Exceptional undergraduate scholarship earns students Kirmser research awards

Three UHP Students received awards at this year’s Sapiens Symposium, the anthropology program’s signature yearly event. Bailey Johnson, anthropology and international studies, received the Cultural Anthropology Eunice Lalunio, anthropology, received the Biological Anthropology Achievement Award and the Martin Ottenheimer Award in Adventurous Anthropology Award. Madison Hines, junior in music education, and Alex Wakim, senior in applied music, were recognized at this year's Music Program Honors Recital and Awards Ceremony. Hines was recognized as a member of Tau Beta Sigma and received the Stan Finck Memorial Leadership Award and the Outstanding Sophomore Music Major award. Wakim was recognized as an initiate into Pi Kappa Lambda and received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Music Major award.

Emma Brase, psychology, and Jordan Voss, computer science and psychology, are recipients of the Doreen Shanteau Undergraduate Research Award presented by K-State's psychological sciences department. The award provides funds that will enable these students to conduct research with their faculty mentors during the following academic year. Students honored by psychological sciences department

Chloe Creager, senior in animal sciences and industry, won an Outstanding Undergraduate Student Research Award at the 2018 Gamma Sigma Delta Undergraduate Research Showcase and Spring Recognition Reception. Creager was also recognized as having one of the top three research presentations at this year’s event. Students and faculty recognized by Gamma Sigma Delta

Joseph Paz, secondary education-social studies, will be the student speaker at commencement for the College of Education.

Shannon Bellamy, biological systems engineering and natural resources and environmental studies; Sara Gammon, agricultural economics and global food systems leadership; and Clara Wicoff, agricultural economics and global food systems leadership; are members of the inaugural cohort of Cargill Fellows. The students will take part in a yearlong leadership development experience and will begin their careers with a unique advantage beyond their technical preparation. Staley School of Leadership Studies selects first cohort of Cargill Fellows

Riley Burghart, biology; Andrew Buyle, mechanical engineering; William Carter, computer science; Rafael Garcia, mass communications; Stephanie McGivern, political science and anthropology; Max Meyer, chemical engineering; Jacob Modlin, accounting and management information systems; Zachary Smith, secondary education-earth science; and Elizabeth Weesner, chemistry; were all selected to become members of the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society at Kansas State University. The members must work to uphold the organization's ideals of leadership, scholarship and service on the university campus and in the Manhattan community. Senior honor society Mortar Board selects new members

Two UHP students placed in multiple categories at the inaugural K-State Sports Marketing Analytics Contest. Ben Gust, senior in accounting and management information systems, took home first prize in the Undergraduate Open category and placed third in the Overall category. Ashlyn Helus, junior in marketing, placed second in the Undergraduate Marketing category and fourth in the Overall category. Inaugural K-State Sports Marketing Analytics Contest awards $3,000 to student competitors

Jordan Disberger, electrical engineering; Kristen Graves, architectural engineering; Lindsey Hageman, industrial engineering; Bailey Herzberg, architectural engineering; Sarah Plum, chemical engineering; Mary Pat Siebert, computer science; and Zach Stanley, industrial engineering were among those honored with selection into K-State's College of Engineering Steel Ring Honor Society. Steel Ring is an honorary comprised of seniors in the College of Engineering. New members are selected by current members following a written application and personal interview process. Steel Ring Honor Society announces new members

Nine UHP students were among those honored with selection into K-State's Silver Key, a sophomore leadership honor society. Sara Partin, English; Clara Bing, psychology; Nicholas Dombrowski, athletic training; Margaret Mankin, biological systems engineering; Nicholas Trauthwein, kinesiology and pre-physical therapy; Natalie Leonard, open option; Jeremy Newport, kinesiology; Dylan Vance, biology; and Sara Gammon, agricultural economics; will all take part in a variety of community service projects as part of their membership in Silver Key. Sophomore leadership honorary selects 2018-2019 members

Abbie O'Grady, sophomore in marketing, as one of two students representing K-State, helped the Sales Team bring home second place overall out of a field of more than 140 students representing 72 universities at this year's National Collegiate Sales Competition hosted by Kennesaw State University. O'Grady also advanced to the semifinals as one of the top 16 competitors. K-State Sales Team shines at 2018 National Collegiate Sales Competition

Gabrielle Phillips, junior in chemical engineering, and Alexa Wilden, sophomore in microbiology and pre-medicine, have received honorable mentions for the 2018 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Three students receive Goldwater honorable mentions

John Riforgiate, a junior in computer science, was named a finalist in the collegiate division of the 32nd annual Japanese Language Speech Contest. The contest, hosted by the Consulate-General of Japan, aims to promote Japanese language education in the Midwest and deepen mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States. Riforgiate's speech was titled "We are not in America anymore!." K-State student wins collegiate division, two named finalists in Japanese Language contest

Larissa Eshelman, senior in architectural engineering, has been selected to receive a regional scholarship from the Wichita Chapter of the Structural Engineering Association of Kansas and Missouri. Eshelman will be awarded a $500 scholarship in recognition of outstanding scholastic and leadership abilities, character and potential service to the structural engineering profession. Seniors in architectural engineering awarded regional scholarships

Amber Berg, a third-year student in the regional and community planning master’s program, is a finalist for the 2018 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Berg is one of 194 students who have been selected as finalists. If awarded the scholarship, Berg would use the funds to support her final two years of the five-year nonbaccalaureate master's program in regional and community planning. Kansas State University student from Missouri named Harry S. Abbie O'Grady, sophomore in marketing, won second place in the individual portion of the Arizona Collegiate Sales Competition. K-State's Sales Team, with Abbie as a member, beat seven other schools to win the University Champion Award for 2018. K-State Sales Team takes home top honors at Arizona Collegiate Sales Competition

Vaithish Velazhahan, senior in microbiology, medical biochemistry and pre-medicine, is receiving the 2018 Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Velazhahan is one of 35 U.S. students to receive the 2018 scholarship established by Bill and Melinda Gates. Velazhahan will study with the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, or LMB, at Cambridge where he will research the structure of key membrane proteins, called G protein-coupled receptors, that help cells communicate with an organism's environment. Gates Cambridge selects first Kansas State University student for international scholarship

Kasey Holle, fourth-year student in architecture, is receiving a $5,000 scholarship as the winner of a College of Architecture, Planning & Design competition sponsored by MANKO Window Systems in Manhattan. Holle’s project was the "KC Film Institute in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, Missouri." The design was an assignment in her fourth-year comprehensive studio class, taught by Genevieve Baudoin, assistant professor, requiring students to integrate conceptual and technical knowledge into one complete project for a presentation with drawings, renderings and models. Following a review, one student from each studio was selected to compete for the MANKO award, with each developing a narrative digital presentation to present to judges, who were all established practitioners in the field. APDesign student wins Manko design competition
