K-State Color Guard

2018 Color Guard Audition Registration

 

Dear Prospective Kansas State Color Guard Member,

You are invited to audition for the Pride of Wildcat Land; Kansas State University Color Guard. Auditions will be held: Saturday, April 28th at Ahearn Field House from 11:30-5pm.

A $10.00 audition fee will be required as you check in. Registration for the auditions is listed above.

CLINIC INFORMATION: The purpose of these clinics is to teach fundamental techniques as utilized at Kansas State so that you will be better prepared for the audition process.

We will hold pre-audition clinics on:

Saturday March 24th, 2018 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Saturday April 7th, 2017 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm

*You are also invited to join the K-State band cheer on the cats at the Spring game on April 21

(These clinics are NOT mandatory to the audition process.)

ORDER OF EVENTS FOR TRYOUTS:

Saturday, April 28th, 2018 –Ahearn Field House

11:30 - Registration, Pay $10 Audition fee

New Members: Two letters of recommendation from a former coach, flag instructor, high school/college teacher (worth points added to the final score) are to be brought with you to the audition.

Returning Veterans: Letter of intent for season (worth points added to the final score).

12:00 - Meeting

12:15 - Learn routine

3:00 - Auditions begin

5:00 - Meeting for ALL 2018 Color Guard members

 

Auditions are closed to all spectators and will consist of

1) basic flag fundamentals while marching (drop spins, double fast, right toss, parallel toss, etc.)

2) artistic flag routine (approx. 2 min in length)

The routine will be taught during the audition process and all prospective members will use K-State equipment.  Please wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

Results will be announced immediately following the auditions and will also be posted on the University Bands office bulletin board (226 McCain Auditorium). Color Guard positions are considered a1-year position. All Color Guard members must re-audition for each season. We will choose a performance squad based on skill-level.

Judges will look at body carriage, attitude, equipment handling and control, timing, coordination, as well as  recovery/effort.

Preferable qualities include:

● versatility as well as mastery of fundamentals

● must learn routines quickly

● must use proper technique (High School experience helpful)

● must be a performer


 

UNIFORMS:

The K-State Marching Band will provide Color Guard primary performance uniforms.

Color Guard members must purchase: Secondary uniforms to include but not limited to:shoes, shorts, t-shirt, long-sleeved cold weather top, wind pants, wind jacket, winter jacket, short black socks, long black socks, hair accessories, performance makeup. (An order form will be sent out after auditions and additional items will be specified. First year member’s secondary uniform cost is approximately $350 based on last season.)

ATTENDANCE:

All Color Guard members will attend all summer camps, regular rehearsals, performances and parades. New members will be required to attend a weekend clinic during the summer to learn pre-game routines. As members of the band, the Color Guard will perform at all marching band functions unless determined otherwise by the Director of Bands and Color Guard Coordinator.

Aug 31-Sept 1, 2018 Purple Power Play TBA (evening)

September 1 vs. South Dakota State (Band Director Day, All-Star Marching Band)

September 8 vs. Mississippi State

September 15 vs. UTSA (Fort Riley Day)

September 29 vs. Texas

October 6 at Baylor (Central States Marching Festival)

October 13 vs. Oklahoma State (Drumline Day, Homecoming)

November 10 vs. KU

November 17 vs. Texas Tech (Senior Day)

WEEKLY REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:

Monday (sectionals) 4pm-7:00pm

Tuesday (full band rehearsal) 3:30pm-5:30pm

Wednesday No Rehearsal

Thursday (full band rehearsal; sectionals) 3:30pm-6:30pm

Friday (tentative rehearsal--performance weeks only) 3:30pm-5:30pm

Saturday (performance) Average call time ranges from 6-8 hours prior to kick-off; determined by Director of Bands.
