Legislative Update

Submitted by Sue Peterson

This week begins the third week of the Kansas legislative session. Activity last week included a flurry of bills being introduced and committee meetings getting into full swing. The constitutional amendment "Value Them Both" restricts the Kansas Supreme Court's ruling stating abortion is an absolute right. The amendment now goes before the full House of Representatives and Senate.

This week, the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee will continue hearings on legislation expanding Medicaid in Kansas. The proponents were heard last week, and the opponents will have the opportunity to testify before the committee this week.

Also, this week the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee will host hearings on Senate Bill 283. The legislation authorizes sports wagering in Kansas. The hearing is at 10:30 am. Wednesday, Jan. 29.
