Kansas Supreme Court justices on campus Monday

Submitted by Colene Lind

Students, faculty and staff are invited to hear directly from Kansas Supreme Court justices as they address the role of the judiciary in democratic government.

Chief Justice Marla Luckert and Justice Caleb Stegall will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Wildcat Chamber in the K-State Student Union. The forum is open to the public.

The justices will address a range of issues including the theory and practice of an independent judiciary, the judicial branch's relationship to the other two branches of government and the structure of the Kansas judicial branch.

This educational forum is co-sponsored by the political science department and the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy of the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication. Earlier in the day, the justices will address students in two political science courses.

Sometimes described as the least understood branch of government, members of the judiciary visit educational settings to familiarize Kansans with the high court, its work and the overall role of the Kansas judiciary.

Contact Nathaniel Birkhead, head of the political science department, at birkhead@k-state.edu or Colene Lind, director of the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy, at iccd@k-state.edu, for more information.
