Legislative Update

This is the final week for House and Senate committees to hear bills referred to the committees before the turnaround date of Feb. 28.

Last week, the House Appropriations Higher Education Budget Committee held budget hearings for both Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. Provost Charles Taber testified on behalf of K-State before the committee on Feb. 14. Please find Provost Taber's testimony to the committee online

This week, the House Higher Education Committee will deliberate on the recommendations for the funding of higher education for fiscal year 2020. Recommendations will be presented to the House Appropriations Committee on Thursday, Feb. 21.

Also, this week a subcommittee of the House Federal and State Affairs Committee will work on legislation to implement sports betting in Kansas.

Finally, this week Kansas State University introduced two pieces of legislation seeking the authorization to sell three pieces of property. One tract is the current Pecan Research Field in Neosho County, four acres next to the International Grains facility in Riley County, and the old gym on the Polytechnic Campus in Saline County. Hearings on House Bills 2159 and 2168 were held before the House Appropriations Committee on Monday, Feb. 18.

The Office of Government Relations hosts bimonthly Legislative Updates. Future dates include March 8, 22 and 29 and April 12. All updates are brown bag sessions at noon in the K-State Student Union's Cottonwood Room.
