DOCPPDoctoral: Professional PracticeA doctor's degree that is conferred upon completion of a program providing the knowledge and skills for the recognition, credential, or license required for professional practice. The degree is awarded after a period of study such that the total time to degree, including both pre-professional and professional preparation, equals six full-time equivalent academic years. Some of these degrees were formerly classified as “first-professional” and may include: Chiropractic (D.C. or D.C.M.); Law (L.L.B. or J.D); Medicine (M.D.); Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.); Pharmacy (Pharm D.); Doctorate of Nursing Practice (D.N.P); or Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.), and others, as designated by the awarding institution.
DOCRSDoctoral: Research/Scholarship

A Ph.D. or other doctor’s degree that requires advanced work beyond the master’s level, including the preparation and defense of a dissertation based on original research or of the planning and execution of an original project demonstrating substantial artistic or scholarly achievement. Some examples of this type of degree may include Ed.D., D.M.A., D.Sc., D.A., or D.M., and others, as designated by the awarding institution.

K-State Note: Dual-major combination logic, for reporting to KBOR (per VP Institutional Effectiveness):

  1. For the College of Business and for the College of Education, utilize only the primary within the college itself.
  2. For the College of Agriculture only the primary within the college itself, except for the following codes:  BAGBUS, BBSM, BFSM, BFDSCI, BMSM.  If a student has any of these plan codes along with another College of Agriculture major, then both are reported.
  3. For all other colleges, report all majors.

Current reasoning for the Dual-Major Logic: Items #1 and #2 are double majors, the same degree type and the students is only issued one diploma even though multiple majors might be received by a student.   KBOR doesn't consider those students to be receiving multiple degrees (i.e., students do not take enough extra courses to warrant another degree).

Dual degreesARN Manual, pg. 49

A dual degree is two unique degree types that a student has elected to pursue at one time (e.g., B.S. in Mathematics and B.S.B.A/ in Business Administration). The requirements for both degrees must be satisfied.

Double Major: ARN Manual, pg. 49-50

A double major are two majors in the same degree type being pursued by a student at one time (e.g., B.S. in Mathematics and B.S. in Geography). The requirements for both degrees must be satisfied.

Associate Degree Programs:  The roles of the state universities and the State's community colleges and technical colleges should be clearly differentiated.  Therefore, the Board of Regents discourages the state universities from offering associate degrees in academic or technical programs where the baccalaureate is available; provided, however, that the Board acknowledges that student demand and community needs may engender requests for associate degree programs, particularly in areas of technology education.  Requests by state universities for associate level programs shall be considered through the new program approval process. {KBOR Policy Manual: Chapter II: Governance - State University, Section A (7)(i)}

Professional Practice Degree Programs:  Since professional practice degree education requires a substantial commitment of resources in the areas of instruction and support, professional practice degree education will primarily occur at the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, and Wichita State University. {KBOR Policy Manual: Chapter II: Governance - State University, Section A (7)(h)}
