Submitted by Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics

Nancy Muturi, professor of media and communications at K-State, will speak on "The 'What' and 'How' of Health Communication as Prevention Science" at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 22, by Zoom. Join the Zoom meeting.

Presentation abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic taught us the critical role of communication in disease prevention and promoting health and well-being. From individuals to organizations and communities globally, communication plays a key role in informing people about health risks and self-protective behaviors, preventing the further spread of diseases, and promoting medical technologies and other innovations. Other outbreaks and epidemics including H1N1 Swine flu, Ebola, SARS, Avian influenza and HIV/AIDS among others have several health consequences but were controlled through effective communication and medical interventions. Health communication is also crucial in eliminating health disparities. This presentation will focus on communication as prevention science, specifically on the application of research and theory in the design, implementation and evaluation of health communication interventions. The presentation will also focus on the importance of collaborations with communications experts in research, prevention interventions and in promoting biomedical technologies. Muturi will also discuss health communication courses offered at the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at Kansas State University.
