College of Business Jump Start Program eases transition for transfer students

Submitted by Ruthie Gergeni

The College of Business Jump Start program helps transfer students transition to K-State.

The College of Business welcomed 19 transfer students to campus on Aug. 8 to get a Jump Start on their success at Kansas State University.

This marks the sixth year the College of Business has hosted the program. Students started the program online on Aug. 3 and concluded with two weeks on campus. Jump Start students came from 14 different institutions and several states.

The objective of the Jump Start program is to help transfer students with their transition to K-State and to get them prepared for the fall semester. The students completed three courses during three intensive weeks: GENBA 105 — Business Orientation; GENBA 205 — Career Accelerator; and ENTRP 240 — Business Innovation and the Entrepreneurial Mindset. In addition to the focus on active learning experiences in the program courses, activities and events facilitated opportunities for community building and networking.

The business orientation course taught by Kevin Moodie, a professional academic advisor in the College of Business, guided students through crafting individual long-range plans for their programs of study and extracurricular activities. Engaging with Rebecca Gould, one of the college's career coaches, and completing the required Career Accelerator course prepared students to confidently attend career-related activities and events in their first semester, including the All-University Career Fair, which will take place Sept. 20-22.

"We are very proud of this program and the impact it has on students and look forward to welcoming another group of students next year," said Bente Janda, the college's assistant dean for undergraduate student services. "With COVID hopefully behind us, our goal is to resume building capacity to allow for more students to start early. We want to thank our campus partners for their collaboration and support of the program."
