Three doctoral students have been awarded graduate fellowships for the fall 2022 semester by the natural resources and environmental sciences secondary major. The new fellows include Laura Krueger, biological and agricultural engineering; Rebecca Lima Albuquerque Maranhao, geography and geospatial sciences; and Clay Robertson, geography and geospatial sciences.

This graduate fellowship program recognizes students with exceptional teaching and research achievements who seek additional experience in interdisciplinary teaching and research mentoring.

"The longstanding mission of the secondary major is to provide undergraduates with a comprehensive interdisciplinary experience in environmental science, sustainability science and natural resource management," said Shawn Hutchinson, professor of geography and geospatial sciences and director of the natural resources and environmental sciences secondary major. "On behalf of our governing board, comprised of faculty from six departments across three colleges, I’m pleased to welcome Laura, Rebecca and Clay to our team of research mentors where they can continue to refine their teaching skills and pass on their passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative environmental problem-solving to our students."

Each fellow receives a $1,500 award for mentoring research conducted by small multidisciplinary teams of senior undergraduates enrolled in the natural resources and environmental sciences capstone class. Recipients are also eligible to apply for a $500 program travel award during the current academic year.

Fellowship applications for the spring 2023 semester are now being accepted and are due no later than April 21, 2023. Doctoral students in any discipline conducting research in the general domains of natural resource management, environmental sciences, human-environment interactions or sustainability science are encouraged to apply.

Interested students should visit the natural resources and environmental sciences website to review detailed application instructions and additional graduate fellowship requirements.
