Building Better Batteries

Steven Klankowski’s Ph.D. thesis, supervised by Prof. Jun Li, involves exploring ways to improve the efficiency and performance of lithium-based batteries. The pair recently devised a promising new technology whereby high surface silicon can be deposited onto conducting carbon nanofibers: the silicon is deposited as very thin layers that coat the brush-like surfaces of the nanotubes. Early tests of this hybrid as an anode material are extremely promising and a patent application has been filed through the Kansas State University Research Foundation.
