Pollution prevention specialist passes national exam on energy management systems

Submitted by David Carter

David Carter, pollution prevention specialist with the Pollution Prevention Institute, engineering extension, recently received confirmation he had met the performance standard established for the ISO 50001 Auditor personnel certification scheme. Carter sat for the national exam in August 2011.

The international energy management system standard, ISO 50001, was finalized and distributed publicly in June. Similar to the ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard, the ISO 50001 standard is intended to provide organizations with a recognized framework for integrating energy performance into their management practices. It follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act model for continual improvement of the energy management system.

Because the standard just came out in June, the training and exam Carter attended in August  was the first of its kind in the United States and was endorsed by RABQSA, a national accreditation body for auditors. The personnel certification scheme for ISO 50001 auditors is still in development and is expected to be completed this month.
