Math department to host memorial for Louis Pigno

Submitted by Andrew Bennett

Louis Pigno, who served as head of the department of mathematics for 28 years, died in Huntington, New York, in August at the age of 83. A memorial for Pigno will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in 121 Cardwell Hall. At that time, we will rename the mathematics department Commons Room in honor of Pigno.

Pigno's 28 years as a department head is believed to be a record at K-State. He oversaw the growth of the K-State math department to an internationally recognized research department, both through his administrative work and his own research. He wrote more than 50 professional papers and achieved international renown when he and co-authors Carruth McGehee and Brent Smith solved a longstanding conjecture of J. E. Littlewood on the L1 norm of exponential sums in 1981. Read a full obituary.

A memorial fund has been established at the Kansas State University Foundation. Contributions may be sent to: KSU Foundation, 1800 Kimball Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan, KS 66502, please indicate fund M47414. To make a gift online, go to ksufoundation.org/give/memorials and select "Louis Pigno Memorial Fund" as the designation.
