KSRE Local Foods Systems group to hold statewide virtual town hall

Submitted by Londa Nwadike

The K-State Research and Extension Local Food Systems Transdisciplinary Team will conduct its quarterly, statewide local foods virtual town hall from 11 a.m. to noon April 27. The goal of the meeting is for people working in the area of local food systems across Kansas to be able to network, collaborate and strengthen local food systems in Kansas.

The agenda for the virtual town hall includes:

  • Five-minute presentations by Russell Plaschka, Kansas Department of Agriculture, on KDA’s Strategic Growth Initiative; Elaine Johannes, K-State Research and Extension, on Hearing Voices, Seeing Signs, connections between social determinants of health and local food; and Tori Laird with an update on the Kansas Food Framework.
  • Open discussion about upcoming and ongoing local food systems-related grants.
    • KSRE plans to apply for a U.S. Department of Agriculture Regional Food Systems Program grant.
    • b. Others.
  • Brief announcements of upcoming local food systems events or initiatives in Kansas that will occur in the next few months.

There are currently many grants open related to local foods and are providing a time when different groups can briefly share information about a proposal that they are working on and put out a request to others in the state for any support that they might need. This portion intends to provide an interactive discussion to encourage collaboration and facilitate more beneficial proposals from Kansas getting funded. If your group has a grant proposal they would like to bring up during this time, please let us know by April 20 so that we can be sure to organize this section accordingly ahead of time.

If interested in being added to the listserv to receive information on the town halls, please email listserv@listserv.ksu.edu with SUB KSRELOCALFOODS and your name in the body of the email.

Please email Londa Nwadike with questions about this town hall.
