TLC Bi-Weekly Newsletter for Wednesday, November 20, 2019

Good morning, K-State!

dff

The end of the semester is almost here!  Here is an update about what is going on in the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC):

Check out our TLC Professional Development Series!

Do you want to earn a TLC Professional Development Certificate or be selected as a TLC Fellow?  You can, by participating in our series!

We have offered twelve events to date, and over 415 people have attended the events in person!  We have explored many domains of teaching and learning and will explore many more.  Zoom participation is available by request if you can’t attend in person.

It is not too late to participate!  All of the events will be cataloged on our TLC Canvas page, and you can catch up at your convenience.

Please email us (teachingandlearning@k-state.edu) if you would like an invitation to our TLC Professional Development Series Canvas Page.  This will provide access to the videos of our professional development events, information about our Professional Development Series, and provide a forum for discussing topics related to teaching and learning.

Recent Event on Effective Pedagogy and Student Anxiety!

This past Monday Drs. Karin Goldberg (Geology), Michele Janette (English), Don Kurtz (Social Work), and Kodee Walls (Counseling Center) offered an informative and thought-provoking workshop on dealing with issues related to student anxiety in our teaching.  This event went so well, we are planning to offer it again toward the end of the Spring semester.  Stay tuned!

Video Resources to Help You Get the Most from Your Teaching Evaluations!

It is teaching evaluation time!  This is an exciting time for our students to offer us feedback on our teaching so that we can improve.  The K-State Student Governing Association has produced a video to help students understand the purpose of teaching evaluations and how to provide effective feedback on them.  Check it out!

Dr. Don Saucier (Professor of Psychological Sciences and TLC Associate Director) also offers a video about how to approach your teaching evaluations, including how to explain the process to your students to help them understand the importance of teaching evaluations so that you get helpful feedback.

The Office of Assessment Is Partnering with the TLC to Offer an Assessment Series

We will be offering, with Fred Burrack and Dorothy Thompson from the Office of Assessment, a series of workshops in a partnership with the Teaching & Learning Center to discuss the all-important topic of assessment.  Teaching, learning, and assessment are three core components of the K-State educational mission, and together we will be offering workshops on:

TLC Highlighted Teacher November 2019

In each newsletter we will feature a K-Stater who is doing something special related to teaching and learning.  This time, our TLC Highlighted Teacher is Kodee Walls.

I'm Kodee Walls and the Assistant Director of Training at Counseling Services.  As a therapist, I enjoy the opportunity to engage with students and become a catalyst for change in their lives.  Collaborating with my clients gives me great satisfaction because I'm empowering them to cultivate resilience in the face of adversity.  As a Training Director, I relish the opportunity to foster the metacompetence, self-assessment, and self-reflection essential for competence in clinical work.  I also teach the online Stress Management course (EDCEP 502), which helps flex my technological pedagogical skills.  Reaching students via Global campus truly makes the world feel personally accessible.
