Legislative Update

Last week the Legislature was focused on Gov. Laura Kelly's State of the State speech. Following the governor's State of the State speech Senate President Ty Masterson delivered the Republican response.

On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee met in a joint meeting. The governor's budget director delivered the budget details for fiscal years 2021, 2022 and years beyond.

Also last week the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers requested a bill be introduced to extend the University Engineering Initiative Act until 2031. The full text and bill number will be available later this week.

This week, Blake Flanders, president and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, will testify on Higher Education by the Numbers before the Kansas Senate Education Committee. The hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.

The Kansas Legislature will provide virtual access to committee meetings and floor action throughout the 2021 legislative session. Links to access the meetings can be found at www.kslegislature.org/li/.

The Office of Government Relations will again provide weekly Legislative Review Sessions through the remainder of the session to discuss the previous week and upcoming hearings and meetings. The next Legislative Review Session will be at noon Friday, Jan. 22, by Zoom. Zoom details are below. You will be required to sign in with your K-State eID and password to access the meeting.
