Save the date: 2020 New Student Convocation

Submitted by Mariya Vaughan

The 2020 New Student Convocation will take place at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.

At the beginning of each school year, thousands of students, faculty, staff and administrators gather at the New Student Convocation event to formally welcome first-year students to the university and introduce them to the campus community. In a normal year, we would gather together, several thousand strong, in Bramlage Coliseum to share in this moment of community and belonging together; however, this is not a normal year, and we want to put the health and safety of our community first during the time of COVID-19. So, we will gather together virtually for the 2020 New Student Convocation.

The event will premier via YouTube at k-state.edu/convocation. All are invited to attend to give the warmest welcome to K-State's newest students.

This year's convocation we will hear from many speakers, including K-State alumnus Tyler Lockett; President Richard Myers; Provost Charles Taber; Student Body President Tel Wittmer; and distinguished young alumnae Mindy McBee and Sarah Sexton-Bowser. Each speaker shares a voice of a community that is focused on student success.

We're encouraging various groups to organize and host their own virtual or small face-to-face gatherings, to forge connections with our new students and to create meaning around the event. Visit the website to explore ideas for hosting a watch party and a discussion facilitation guide.

If you do host a virtual or small group watch party, please consider taking a photo or screenshot and sending it to kstatefirst@k-state.edu or tag @kstatefirst on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram so we can share the ways that everyone is engaging in the event.
