COVID-19 lease addendum may be option for off-campus student tenants

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

As K-State prepares to resume on campus classes, the uncertainty with the COVID-19 virus may cause students to be hesitant to return to Manhattan should the university need to change to remote learning in the fall. Students living in off-campus housing may have the option to modify leasing options with their landlords.

Unless other factors are present, classes being transitioned to online learning is not a basis for termination of a rental agreement. Landlords and tenants can agree, however, to modify a lease to take into consideration unknown or unexpected impacts of the pandemic. This modification must be in writing through an addendum.

More information on the COVID-19 addendum is available on the Off-Campus Housing Support website at k-state.edu/ochs/. Landlords who agree to offer the addendum also will be posted to this website.

Students can contact the Off-Campus Housing Support at ochsupport@k-state.edu or Student Legal Services at barr@k-state.edu for assistance.
