Three national awards of distinction within fraternity community

Submitted by Dominic Barker

Theta Xi, a registered student organization; Matt Mindrup, graduation candidate in biology; and Jordan Kocher, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, have all been honored with 2019 North American Interfraternity Conference awards of distinction for chapters, undergraduates and advisors, respectfully. These awards recognize excellence in the fraternal experience to individuals and groups who exemplify leadership, service and fraternal values.

Theta Xi, which also won this award in 2015, continues the five-year streak of a fraternity chapter at K-State being recognized by the council.

"Theta Xi has continued to raise the bar," Kocher said. "Rather than settling into mediocrity after past successes, they have continued to find new ways to better what they call 'the privilege and responsibility of brotherhood.'"

The fraternity community also has an undergraduate recognized as one of 12 outstanding student leaders across the country: Mindrup, who has served Delta Sigma Phi, the Interfraternity Council, and various student organizations and departments at K-State.

"My undergraduate fraternity experience is something I will treasure for the rest of my life," Mindrup said. "Through involvement in my own chapter, IFC, and other fraternity programming and leadership opportunities, I was able to grow and develop as a leader and more importantly as a man."

Lastly, Kocher was honored with the advisor award of distinction. This award began in 2017 and Kocher is among five recipients nationwide recognized for advising and advancing the fraternal movement.

"I am so proud to be serving this fraternity community — made up of incredible chapters, leaders and students," Kocher said. "These chapter and council leaders continue to step up, addressing collegiate/fraternal issues through a community standards program, educational programming and mental health resources. I'm lucky to play a part in supporting that. I'm also thankful for the engaged alumni and advisors who support our students day in and day out. It takes all of us!"

Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Upsilon, FarmHouse and Theta Xi are past recipients of chapter of distinction awards in 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015, respectively. Lucas Renz was awarded the Undergraduate Award of Distinction in 2018.
