Speaker to highlight John C. Fremont's historic travels through Riley County
"John C. Fremont — in History and in Riley County" is the topic of a presentation at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Manhattan Headquarters Fire Station, 2000 Denison Ave., near the intersection of Kimball and Denison. Ron Wilson, director of K-State's Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development, will speak. The Riley County Historical Society is hosting the event.
"Pioneering explorer John C. Fremont was considered one of the giants of 19th century America," Wilson said. "This year marks the 175th anniversary of his 1843 expedition which took him directly through what would become Riley County, Kansas. I'm pleased that the Riley County Historical Society is recognizing this nearly forgotten milestone in our state’s history," he said.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
