Mathematics department to host national math competition for third year

Submitted by Natasha Rozhkovskaya

The mathematics department's Math Circle Seminar will host the International Math Kangaroo Competition on March 15, 2018. Registration for the competition is due Dec. 15.

The nationwide popularity of the competition is steadily growing, with more than 28,000 students participating last year. Sixty students took the test at K-State's center in 2017, and 12 of these students were recognized as all-national or all-state winners.

The competition is open to all students in grades 1-12. The 75-minute test is offered in 12 levels that correspond to school grade levels. Twenty-four questions are offered to students in grades 1-4 and 30 questions to students in grades 5-12. The challenging competition questions are selected by the International Math Kangaroo committee.

Each student will receive a competition booklet, T-shirt, certificate of participation and gift. Students who earn top scores at each level of participation will be awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. Also, in each participating state, first-, second- and third-place winners will be recognized at each level. Winners will be announced in May 2018.
