Advising survey available today for eligible undergraduate students

Submitted by Chris Urban

The advising survey was initially created to provide a report to the Kansas Board of Regents on the quality of advising at K-State, as well as provide individual advisors with feedback on their performance. The Office of Student Life administered the survey through KSIS prior to 2017.

In spring 2017, the University Advising Committee expressed interest in improving the survey to provide higher quality feedback to advisors for their continued development.

A subcommittee of advisors worked to improve the questionnaire and the survey process. The Office of Assessment supported the implementation of improvements for fall 2017, and is now responsible for the administration of the survey.

Improvements to the new survey include new formatting and questions using Qualtrics.

Students will still need to complete the survey before enrolling. The following steps are involved in the advising survey process for students:

  1. Students meet with their advisor concerning enrollment for the spring semester.
  2. Once the advisor flag "hold" is lifted, students will receive a new hold in KSIS indicating that they can complete the advising survey any time prior to enrolling. The advising survey hold will prevent students from enrolling in spring classes until they complete the survey.
  3. Students access the advising survey link in KSIS — see step-by-step instructions. Unlike prior years, the link to this year's survey can be found directly in the hold details.
  4. Instructions in the survey will guide students through completion. The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete.
  5. After the survey has been completed, the hold will be automatically removed. Students should allow at least 10 minutes for this process to complete.

After the survey closes at the end of enrollment, this new process will provide more data regarding the quality of advising across the university. College administrators will be able to access aggregated data on the advisors' ratings in their respective colleges. Administrators will not be able to view any specific advisor's ratings, only aggregated data.

In addition, advisors will be able to view statistics on each item in their individual evaluations, as well as all written comments verbatim. As always in such ratings, all reports are confidential. Reports of results will not contain any information that identifies an individual student or his/her responses, written or otherwise.

Survey preview links, details about the process, and FAQ can be found on the advising survey website.
