McNair Explorers
McNair Explorers provides opportunities for first- and second-year students to learn about graduate school, professional development, and research opportunities. Participation is a semester-long commitment, but students can return for future semesters if they complete the requirements and receive approval from McNair staff.
Eligibility requirements:
- A first-generation and income-eligible college student or a member of an underrepresented group in graduate education
- A first- or second-year student
Curriculum and Expectations for Involvement
McNair Explorers are required to attend three events hosted by campus partners each semester. After attending events, Explorers will complete a reflection assignment.
Explorers will participate for the full semester. They can participate for additional semesters with approval from the staff. If a student continues on in the program, they are encouraged to explore research opportunities and internships.
If the student completes all requirements, they will receive a certificate showing their accomplishment.
How to become a McNair Explorer
To become a McNair Explorer, please email Emily Vieyra to set up a meeting.
Each Explorer will meet with a staff member to create a contract outlining expectations for the program and set goals. Students get to decide what events and programs will be more beneficial for them. With the help of staff members, students will create a plan that works with their success in mind.

Being a McNair Explorer does not automatically qualify you as a TRIO McNair Scholar. There are additional requirements and applications students must complete if they are eligible.
