What are microcredentials?

Microcredentials are flexible, affordable, and short units of learning we've created for next-gen learners who are learning on the go at any stage of life. Through these carefully tailored course combinations, we equip learners with digital badges that showcase achievement and demonstrated skills.

Two Options

The Department of Modern Languages offers two options to showcase your skills to potential employers: the French for Professions microcredential and the Spanish Basic Translation and Health Services microcredential. Both options involve taking two courses and completing a culminating experience in combination with those courses: the internationally recognized Diplôme de Français Professionnel exam for French for Professions or a capstone interview with a K-State Spanish faculty member for Spanish Basic Translation and Health Services. Earn a microcredential on your way to a major (Modern Languages) or a minor (French, Spanish or Spanish Translation) or as a standalone credential!

French for the Professions

Prerequisites
Learners who wish to complete the French for Professions microcredential must meet the prerequisites for FREN 517 (French for the Professions). The recommendation is FREN 301 (French 4) or instructor permission.

Ready to take your French to the next level?
This microcredential prepares you for real professional environments — from international business to diplomacy — with certified spoken and written French skills. Available through two focused courses covering specialized vocabulary, résumé and CV writing, interview skills, and business culture across the French-speaking world. Score 70%+ on coursework and pass the Diplôme de Français Professionnel exam to earn your digital badge.

Spanish Basic Translation and Health Services

Prerequisites
Learners who wish to complete the Spanish Basic Translation and Health Services microcredential must meet the prerequisites for SPAN 531 (Professional Spanish: Health and Human Services) and SPAN 575 (Introduction to Spanish Translation). For SPAN 531, the prerequisite is SPAN 410 or 411. For SPAN 575, the prerequisite is three credits hours of SPAN at the 500-level or instructor permission.

This microcredential builds your Spanish-English communication skills for real U.S. Latinx health settings — covering vocabulary, cultural awareness, and hands-on translation practice. Available online or in-person. Score 80%+ in SPAN 531 (Professional Spanish: Health and Human Services) and SPAN 575 (Introduction to Spanish Translation) to earn your credential.
