Submitted by Trisha Brown

Patrick Mattie, engineering manager at Sandia National Laboratories, will be the featured speaker at the Civil Engineering Graduate Seminar Invited Lecture Series at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in 1052 Rathbone Hall.

Mattie will discuss the history and basis for subsurface geologic disposal, specific design characteristics and the safety evaluation of the disposal of defense-generated transuranic waste. A brief overview of the design and characteristics of DOE's proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, will also be presented.

The lecture is sponsored by the Munger Professorship in Civil Engineering.
