Keys to Success

If a remote work arrangement has been established, employees may wish to revisit some considerations to ensure they are best supported by the department and prepared for the most suitable remote work conditions.
Identify a dedicated workplace. You don’t have to have a separate room devoted to work but it may be helpful to have a dedicated workspace that you can think of as where you “go to work”. It is helpful to carve out a distraction-free zone where you can have privacy. It may be helpful to discuss your workspace needs with others who may be sharing your home or living space. Finally, be sure that everyone in your space agrees upon how you may handle privacy, interruptions, and background noise.
Establish routines. Keep a regular schedule and communicate those work hours and availability you’re your supervisor and team. For some people, being disciplined about work also means dressing professionally each day. Take regular breaks and walk away from your computer to stretch, go for a walk, exercise, and eat. Plan these into your schedule.
Prioritize work and share progress. Start the day with a clear plan and set of priorities to help you stay engaged, organized, and productive. Be proactive and confirm priorities with your supervisor and teammates to ensure alignment on expectations. It’s also helpful to check-in regularly to share progress, exchange feedback, and seek/offer support where appropriate.
Communicate often. Communicate with your supervisor and team. Don’t assume that your colleagues know what you are doing. Work out loud when you can and share progress with your team as you go. You may find it helpful to send your supervisor regular updates. Embrace alternative methods of communication and agree with your team on preferred methods (ex: Microsoft Teams, Zoom, email).
Connect purposefully. Connect with your teammates through “virtual” coffee or lunch so you can remain connected to your colleagues. Leverage virtual platform tools where you can socialize, share pictures, and connect.
Be responsive and available. A lag in communication can create distance in remote work teams. Establish reasonable response times and make an effort to honor it. Leverage calendars and away messages to let your teammates know if you are going to be unavailable for an extended period of time. In virtual meetings, free yourself from distractions and tune into the conversation.
Show up well. Assume positive intent and be open to constructive dialogue. Demonstrate kindness and empathy toward your colleagues. Remember that we are all different and everyone has different needs.
