Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Tornadoes

Submitted by Savannah Greiner

NWS tornado sheltering guidelines

As part of Severe Weather Preparedness week, today we're sharing some tips on how to prepare for tornadoes.

  • Check the forecast regularly during severe weather season. Kansas' peak tornado season is from April to June. However, they can happen anytime and anywhere.
  • Make sure you have multiple ways to be notified of severe weather and stay up to date on weather alerts. Listen to your local news or weather radio. Ensure your K-State Alerts setting is to the correct campus —Manhattan, Salina or Olathe.
  • Sign up for your local community's warning system.
  • Ensure you have a communications plan and can contact others within your household.
  • Locate a safe place to shelter: basement, storm cellar or interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. If you are going to be in an unfamiliar or new area, make sure to locate a place to shelter ahead of time. If you are outside, seek shelter inside a sturdy building immediately. In a vehicle, get to the closest shelter or building. Do not go under an overpass or bridge.
  • Remember a tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible in your area, so be prepared. A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated on radar; take shelter immediately.
