Attend 'Transitioning from RefWorks' workshop on Oct. 21

Submitted by Darchelle Martin

The K-State Libraries' subscription to RefWorks will end on Dec. 31. Users who have not transferred their citations to a new citation manager are encouraged to attend our workshop "Transitioning from RefWorks." The workshop at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in 1053 College of Business Building will demonstrate using Zotero and provide assistance with transferring citations.

All users who want to keep citations and PDFs stored in RefWorks must transfer them to an alternate citation manager. After Dec. 31, K-State users' RefWorks accounts will be permanently inaccessible.

Due to declining budgets and the growing financial burden created by the serials crisis, K-State Libraries must make ongoing cancellations to subscription-based materials. The decision to cancel RefWorks was based on the availability of free and low-cost alternatives and declining usage of the product.

More information about the RefWorks cancellation is available at K-State Libraries' website.

Librarians have created detailed instructions on how to:

1. Select an alternate citation manager such as Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote.
2. Transfer citations and PDFs out of RefWorks and into the new platform.

In addition, users who are unable to attend the workshop on Oct. 21 should reach out to the Libraries for assistance.

"In order to improve the process, the Libraries staff has created a bookmarklet to streamline the transfer," said Carol Sevin, academic services librarian. "Any time you're working with computers, though, there is the possibility of glitches. We want anyone who needs assistance to contact us right away. We'll set up a time to meet in person, help complete the transfer and make sure you're comfortable using whichever citation manager you elect to use."
