Application open for 2020 arts, humanities and social sciences Small Grant Program

Submitted by Sunanda Dissanayake

The Graduate School announces the sixth year of funding for the Small Grant Program to support research expenses for master's and doctoral students in their final year. Grants up to $1,000 will support direct research costs such as travel to an archive, data collection, or exhibition and performance expenses for graduate students doing original research in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

A panel of faculty in these disciplines will review applications in late 2019. Funds will be available after Jan. 15, 2020.

Recent grant recipients have used the funding to complete research to study effects of dietary supplements, design a model school in Nicaragua, provide Girl Scout leader wellness training, evaluate participatory research on food insecurity on campuses, and an analysis of competition in the digital music aggregation industry. These are just a few examples of how the $500-$1,000 grants made a difference.

Previous year's strong applicant pools demonstrate the strong need for this program, as it helps reduce students' financial burden in fields where there is often limited external funding. The grant program was highly recommended in the "Report of the Task Force on Needs of KSU Graduate Students in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Conducting Scholarly Activities" that was completed in summer 2014.

The application deadline is Friday, Nov. 8.
