Legislative Update

Submitted by Sue Peterson

The Kansas House of Representatives Appropriations Committee held hearings Feb. 6 on the state of higher education in Kansas. Kansas State University President Richard Myers and chief executive officers or representatives from the six state universities testified before the committee. The testimonies reflected higher education's role in a strong economy for the state and the connection for graduates obtaining good jobs in Kansas. The discussion also focused on partnerships the universities have ongoing with business and industry in the state. The committee will make budget decisions on higher education and the universities later in the legislative session. Myers' testimony can be found online

This week, the House Appropriations Higher Education Budget Committee will host budget hearings. Provost Charles Taber will testify on behalf of K-State before the committee on Thursday, Feb. 14. Please see the Feb. 19 Legislative Update for Taber's testimony to the committee.

Also this week, a subcommittee of the House Federal and State Affairs Committee will host public hearings on the issue of sports betting in Kansas. Testimony and information on committee activities will be posted at k-state.edu/govrelations.

The Office of Government Relations hosts bimonthly Legislative Updates. Future dates include Feb. 15, March 8, 22 and 29, and April 12. All updates are brown bag sessions at noon in the K-State Student Union's Cottonwood Room.
