Legislative update

It is the beginning of the fourth week of the Kansas Legislative Session. Multiple hearings are scheduled and bills continue to be introduced. A list of bills affecting Kansas State University can be found on the governmental relations website.

Gov. Sam Brownback will resign the Office of Governor at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31. Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will take the oath of Office of Governor in the Rotunda of the State Capitol immediately after Brownback's resignation.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, House and Senate Education committees will receive a presentation from Blake Flanders, CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, and Randy Watson, state education commissioner, on concurrent enrollment in Kansas.

The House and Senate committees on Agriculture will be briefed Thursday, Feb. 1, on the state of poultry in Kansas by Scott Beyer, associate professor of animal science Kansas State University.

Also on Thursday, the House Higher Education Budget Committee will review FTE positions at the state universities. Cindy Bontrager, vice president for administration and finance, Kansas State University, will present a report on behalf of the University Council of Chief Business Officers to the committee.

The Kansas legislative Session's first adjournment will be Friday, April 6. The veto session will convene on Thursday, April 26. The 90th day is May 4.

In addition, the Office of Governmental Relations will host Kansas Legislative Review Sessions at noon on Feb. 2 and 12, in the K-State Student Union's Bluemont Room; and March 2, 16 and 30 in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. These sessions are open to all faculty, staff and students; feel free to bring a brown-bag lunch.
