Industrial engineering students earn Culbertson Steel Ring Scholarships

Submitted by Lacey Brummer

Two industrial engineering seniors from Kansas State University have been honored for their leadership in student organizations and activities.

Gabrielle Lobo, Overland Park, and Alonso Talamantes, Hutchinson, each received the W. Leroy Culbertson Steel Ring Leadership Scholarship, April 19, at the College of Engineering Leadership Banquet. The scholarship is awarded annually to K-State engineering students who follow Culbertson's legacy of leadership and learning. This is the first year two recipients have been selected for the award.

Both Lobo and Talamantes have been actively involved in organizations in the industrial and manufacturing systems engineering department and the College of Engineering.

Lobo, majoring in industrial engineering with minors in statistics and business, plans to graduate in spring 2017. She currently serves as a Women in Engineering mentor; an engineering ambassador; and a president-elect, regional conference coordinator and outreach director for the Engineering Student Council. She also is a member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, Alpha Pi Mu and Steel Ring. In 2014, Lobo was named outstanding sophomore in industrial engineering. Beyond her involvement at the university, Lobo also is a volleyball and basketball coach for the Manhattan Special Olympics.

Talamantes plans to graduate with a concurrent bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering in spring 2017. He is a member of Steel Ring, serves as chapter development co-chair and treasurer for the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and is an engineering ambassador, as well as a mentor for the Ellis Scholar's Program and the industrial and manufacturing systems engineering department. In 2014, he was named College of Engineering's underclassman of the year by Tau Beta Pi. Outside of engineering, Talamantes is a member of the K-State marching band and serves as assistant section leader for the alto saxophones.

The W. Leroy Culbertson Steel Ring Leadership Scholarship was permanently endowed in 1985 by Culbertson's wife, Wanda Culbertson, along with additional donations from Steel Ring Engineering Honor Society alumni. Scholarship recipients are selected by the Steel Ring Scholarship Committee.
