Bharat Ratra, K-State professor of physics, will present a science talk on "The Accelerating Expanding Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy and Einstein's Cosmological Constant" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program at the Manhattan Public Library, 629 Poyntz Ave.

Ratra will describe what is persuading cosmologists that — as yet undetected — dark energy and dark matter are the main pieces of the universe's energy budget and how these observations have led to the developing quantitative "standard" model of cosmology. In this non-technical talk, he will also discuss the basic physics, and the history of ideas, on which this model is based.

The event is co-sponsored by the K-State physics department, Kansas Science Festival and the Manhattan Public Library.
