John Kilgore, instructor of trumpet, presents research at the 2022 International Trumpet Guild Conference this week in San Antonio. Kilgore’s presentation, "From New Jersey to Cincinnati: The Life and Career of Classical Trumpeter Philip Collins," provides the first in-depth depiction of Collins, who prominently served as principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops Orchestra for 31 seasons. During his tenure, the orchestras produced over 100 albums, resulting in Collins becoming one of the most recorded principal trumpeters in the world.

As part of the research process, Kilgore interviewed Collins to gain a comprehensive depiction of experiences that shaped his artistry and life — elementary age through activities today.

With membership spanning 56 countries, the guild is the world’s largest organization dedicated to research, performance, education and scholarship related to trumpet.

Faculty in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance have received Grammy and Emmy awards and nominations, produced recordings on international and national CD labels, published books and journal articles with international and national publishing houses and professional organizations and performed and presented research in every continent in the world except Antarctica. The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Visit the school's website to learn more about music, theatre and dance at K-State.
