Dr. Shawn Bates

The Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Approaches to Plasticity, or CNAP, invites you to attend a colloquium presentation by Shawn Bates, assistant professor of psychology at California State University, Chico. The presentation will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, in 5102 Bluemont Hall and via Zoom. The event is free and open to the public.

Adolescence is a period of developmental alterations that may contribute to an increased likelihood of using drugs. Furthermore, association with drug-abusing individuals or the perception of drug abuse by peers are risk factors for the initiation and escalation of abuse. Bates and his team examined the long-term ramifications of drug exposure in adolescence and the role of the social environment in adolescent drug response. Their studies suggest that repeated drug use in adolescence produces neuroadaptations that may contribute to addiction. Additionally, social housing conditions alter the response to drugs. The results extend the understanding of potential consequences of drug use in adolescents.

This presentation is sponsored by the CNAP Center, an NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence under grant number P20GM113109.
