Study: Vaccination offers strong protection against COVID-19, even during delta surge

A recent study has found that COVID-19 vaccines are extremely effective, even during the delta surge. Kansas State University leaders continue to look at the latest research to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
The study appeared in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The research team was led by the CDC COVID-19 Response Team and involved 59 researchers across the country.
In the study, researchers monitored the incidence of COVID-19 cases, hospitalization and deaths by vaccination status in 13 U.S. jurisdictions from April to July 2021.
The researchers found that even after delta became the most common variant, fully vaccinated people still experienced:
- 5 times the reduced risk of infection.
- More than 10 times the reduced risk of hospitalization.
- More than 10 times the reduced risk of death.
The researchers also found that incidence rate ratios for hospitalization and death changed relatively little after the delta variant became dominant, which suggests that the vaccine has high, continued effectiveness against severe COVID-19. Case incidence rate ratios decreased, which also suggests reduced vaccine effectiveness for preventing SARS-CoV-2 infections. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19.
