Submitted by Mary Rankin

The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering hosted its virtual Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Showcase in April. Participants submitted their abstract, digital poster and three-minute recorded video explaining their poster and research activity. Industry representatives served as virtual judges. All engineering departments were represented in the showcase.

Winning entries were as follows:

First place — Ashton Gohman, junior in chemical engineering, "Spatiotemporal Dynamic Modeling of Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cells"; research advisor, Davood Pourkargar, assistant professor, chemical engineering.

Second place — Elizabeth Seidl, junior in biological and agricultural engineering, "Phytic Acid: A Plant-based Purification Strategy"; research advisor, Lisa Wilken, associate professor, biological and agricultural engineering.

Third place — Carlos Espino-Mendez, junior in architectural engineering and construction science, "Performance of a Refrigeration System Using R-134a Alternative Refrigerants"; research advisor, Melanie Derby, associate professor, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
