Glossary of frequently used data terms launched

Submitted by Bin Ning

To improve the consistency, clarity and understanding of K-State data reports, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment has launched a Data Glossary page on its website.

Created under guidance of the University Data Standard Committee, the initial terms in the data glossary represent data elements frequently used in reports and business intelligence tools generated by the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment and other units. The glossary allows users to search, suggest new definitions and view detailed supplementary files when available.

The University Data Standard Committee, a subsidiary working group of the University Data Governance Committee, meets regularly and works together to identify and define commonly used data across systems by:

  • Establishing common definitions and understandings for most frequently used data.
  • Discussing and resolving certain complex issues related to data definition and structure.
  • Promoting collaborations across data users, data stewards, and corresponding units.
  • Maintaining an open and regular communications among data managers and users.

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact Bin Ning, associate provost for institutional research and assessment and chair of the committee, at bning@k-state.edu.
