Jessica de Oliveira Demarco, doctoral student in biological and agricultural engineering, São José das Missões — RS, Brazil, and Micah Cameron-Harp, doctoral student in agricultural economics, Rochester, New York, have been awarded graduate fellowships for the spring 2021 semester by the natural resources and environmental Sciences, or NRES, secondary major.

The NRES Graduate Fellowship program recognizes students with exceptional teaching and research achievements who seek additional experience in interdisciplinary teaching and research mentoring.

"The long-standing mission of the NRES secondary major is to provide undergraduates with a comprehensive interdisciplinary experience in environmental science, sustainability science, and natural resource management," said Shawn Hutchinson, professor of geography and geospatial sciences and director of the NRES secondary major. "On behalf of our governing board, comprised of faculty from six departments from three colleges, I'm pleased to welcome Jessica and Micah to our team of research mentors where they can continue to refine their teaching skills and pass on their passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative environmental problem-solving to our students."

Each fellow receives an award of $1,500 for mentoring research by small multidisciplinary teams of senior undergraduates enrolled in the NRES capstone class — BAE/DAS/GENAG 582 — this semester. Recipients are also eligible to apply for a $500 NRES Travel Award during the current academic year.

Fellowship applications for the fall 2021 semester are now being accepted and will be due no later than April 9. Doctoral students in any discipline who are conducting research in the general domains of natural resource management, environmental sciences, human-environment interactions, or sustainability science are encouraged to apply.

Interested students should visit the NRES website to review detailed application instructions and additional NRES Graduate Fellowship requirements.
