Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Donald Asher, an internationally recognized author and expert on careers in higher education, will present a professional development seminar from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Town Hall at Kansas State University's Leadership Studies Building.

The event, organized by the university's Graduate Student Council, is geared toward graduate students, but undergraduates, faculty and staff are welcome.

"This should be a fantastic opportunity for graduate students to learn about and practice appropriate and effective networking strategies across a wide range of situations, such as at professional events like conference poster sessions, at social gatherings or in social media," said Tammy Sonnentag, doctoral candidate in psychology and president of the Graduate Student Council.

The council strives to offer a wide range of professional development opportunities for graduate students at Kansas State University, including by bringing nationally recognized speakers or presenters to campus to discuss various professional development topics.

Asher is known as "America's job search guru." He has written 12 books, including "Cracking the Hidden Job Market" and the best-selling guide to getting into graduate school, "Graduate Admissions Essays." His books are available in English, Chinese, Korean and Portuguese.

Named a "career mastermind" in 2011 by the award-winning Web portal QuintCareers, Asher has been the career columnist for USAirways magazine, education columnist for MSN and a contributing writer for the Wall Street Journal's CareerJournal.com.

"We hope that graduate students who choose to attend Donald Asher's seminar will learn how to effectively share information about themselves in order to advance their careers and cultivate successful professional relationships," Sonnentag said.

Asher has also been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Boston Globe, The Globe and Mail, salary.com, US News & World Report, Forbes, Fortune, Men's Healthand many other publications.

Graduate students are invited to attend an interactive session with Asher to practice what they learned from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in 123 Leadership Studies Building.
