Legislative update
Monday, April 30, started the final week of the 2018 Kansas legislative veto session. Final adjournment is scheduled for Friday, May 4.
For legislative action this week, the fiscal year 2019 supplemental budget will dominate the discussions. The Kansas House and Senate have both passed budgets including differences in the amount of restoration for the fiscal year 2017 allotments made to higher education. The House budget includes a restoration of $12 million for higher education. The Senate budget includes a restoration of 75 percent for higher education. The House/Senate Budget Conference Committee will meet this week to iron out final decisions on all budget issues.
The Legislature approved a school finance plan to submit to the Kansas Supreme Court before the April 7 adjournment. A fix to the formula was discovered and the Legislature will also deal with a bill to provide the fix this week.
A list of bills pertaining to higher education and Kansas State University can be found on the governmental relations website.
The Office of Governmental Relations will host a Kansas Legislative Review Session from noon to 1 p.m. on May 9 in the K-State Student Union's Bluemont Room. This session is open to all K-State faculty, staff and students; feel free to bring a brown-bag lunch.
