K-State Global Campus offers professional development for teaching online

Submitted by Grant Guggisberg

Kansas State University Global Campus, in partnership with K-State Polytechnic, will offer K-State Online Essentials, a course preparation experience designed to assist in developing a quality online course. The experience is for K-State faculty members who are currently teaching online courses or who plan to develop an online course during the summer.

K-State Online Essentials will meet on campus from 9 a.m. to noon June 6-8. Several hands-on technology demonstrations and discussions will take place in the classroom. The remainder of the summer course will be conducted through K-State Online. Lisa Shappee, K-State Polytechnic library director and assistant professor, has taught the course several times on the Polytechnic and Manhattan campuses. Faculty members taking the course will design a new online course or re-design an existing online course.

The course covers pedagogy and best practices for teaching online while offering practical applications. Through the course, participants gain higher confidence in the ability to teach online, learning meaningful instructor-to-student and student-to-student interaction techniques.

Distance Education Conference stipends of $1,000 will be provided by K-State Global Campus to faculty members, who are active online instructors, to attend one of three conferences centered on online teaching and learning. Conference opportunities include:

  • Distance Teaching and Learning, Madison, Wisconsin, July 25-27.
  • Online Learning Consortium Accelerate, Orlando, Florida, Nov. 15-17.
  • Online Learning Consortium Innovate, April 2018 (location and dates TBA).

Faculty interested in the Online Essentials course or the conference opportunity can apply online. Applications are due March 31. A selection process will take place in April with class participants and conference attendees receiving notification by May 1.
