College of Arts & Sciences hosts Undergraduate Research Opportunities Fair on Aug. 25

Submitted by Chris Shumway

Hands-on experience is a valuable asset for all students. Getting that experience as an undergraduate is even more valuable. The College of Arts & Sciences provides opportunities for undergraduate research in every department in the college.

Students can explore research, scholarship and discovery opportunities at the College of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Research Opportunities Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Coffman Commons between Eisenhower Hall and Hale Library.

Students in the college also may register for the chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. Students must be present to register, but do not need to be present to win.

Representatives from more than 20 departments in the college will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about how students can get involved with the Undergraduate Research Program and the Student Research Travel Program.

From laboratories to libraries, the fair will showcase a wide range of scholarly activities and discovery opportunities in the College of Arts & Sciences, K-State's largest and most diverse college.

"Many of our graduates who have had successful professional careers got their start with undergraduate research in the College of Arts & Sciences," said Beth Montelone, associate dean of research in the college. "We hope to make this opportunity available to many more of our students in the future. Please come by and learn about the options!"

Students who are interested will have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member to hone their research interests and make a contribution to the field at one of the nation's leading public research universities while earning a scholarship. They also will be able to network with researchers at conferences to present findings. This is a chance to stand out when searching for a career, or applying to graduate or professional school.

Free lemonade and cookies will also be provided. More information, including a list of departments at the event, is available online
