A letter from Zelia Wiley: MLK Week, Black History Month celebrations

Submitted by Zelia Z. Wiley

Happy February!

Thank you to everyone in the K-State family and the Manhattan community for attending and hosting the myriad of events for the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Week. The amount of wisdom and depth of conversations shows our true compassion, a trait that would make King proud.

We are the only Big 12 institution that celebrates King's efforts by hosting a week of activities. Our three campuses are commended for this success. I hope the energy from last week will remain with us as we transition into February for our next cultural celebration.

The Black Student Union, or BSU, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and several other student organizations, will host Black History Month celebrations. On Feb. 9, the BSU will host, Maggie Anderson, author of "Our Black Year," who will present "The Empowerment Experiment: My Year of Buying Black." You do not want to miss the educational event. Please look for announcements as well as following the BSU OrgSync page for more information.

I would be remiss not to thank the Office of Diversity's staff — Mirta Chavez, Romaine Schell, Caitlyn Wells and  Brandon Clark — and all of our dedicated student workers for their hard work and dedication for a successful week. Our office is here to serve all K-Staters during your educational journey. You are always welcome to visit us at 224 Anderson Hall. You also can follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Again, thanks to all who support the 2016 MLK events.

Go 'Cats!
