Kim, Dudek receive Stowe Award for multicultural design studio projects

Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

Hyung-Chan Kim and Michael Dudek have been granted the 2015 Dean Barbara S. Stowe Faculty Development Award from the College of Human Ecology to work on a multicultural design studio collaboration with a university in Korea.

Both are associate professors in the apparel, textiles and interior design department.

With the grant they will continue and expand collaborative multicultural design studio projects with Korean university partners. One goal is to establish a partnership for an intensive online, real-time design collaboration project to be offered as a January intersession course. The course will create an international design experience for students as they work together with design students in Korea through a virtual conference system.

Kim previously established a collaboration and knowledge exchange project in which K-State fourth-year interior design majors interact virtually with design students in Korea.

"The class was successful in enhancing our students’ international experiences and understanding of different cultures and ideas," Kim said.

Stowe served as dean of human ecology at K-State from 1983 to 1998. The fund, established in her honor, supports the professional development of faculty who translate research-based knowledge of human ecology into practice in higher education, business, industry or public policy.
