SafeZone advanced training: Empowered Allies

Submitted by Anna Waugh

SafeZone will offer an advanced training session, Empowered Allies, from 11 a.m. to noon March 10 in 123 Leadership Studies Building.

During this one-hour training, guest speaker Jessica Muñoz will discuss bystander intervention. Bystander intervention refers to a range of actions individuals can use to prevent harm or intervene when there is a risk for sexual violence. Bystanders who intervene make a choice to not be complicit to the violence they witness. There are a wide range of safe options individuals can use to intervene safely.

SafeZone has been a part of Kansas State University's atmosphere since the 1970s when it was initially started to help those facing discrimination because of sexual orientation. After a revitalization of the program in 2002, SafeZone has evolved to fit the needs of current K-State community members. Allies are now educated to help those coming from a variety of background with needs concerning hateful acts like bullying or discrimination, LGBTQ-related concerns, or sexual violence. Since SafeZone's creation on campus, more than 1,000 allies have been trained.
