Submitted by Shandell Gallardo

Faculty and students from the Mary Lynn and Warren Staley School of Leadership Studies traveled to San Diego, California, to participate in the 16th annual International Leadership Association Global Conference, Oct. 30 to Nov. 2.

The conference brought together individuals from more than 30 countries to focus on the theme Conscious Leading for Global Change: Emergence of our Collective Realities.

The student case competition team at the conference was a team of mixed graduate and undergraduate students who represented Kansas State and the Staley School of Leadership Studies in association's annual student case competition. Team members included: Alix Bilip, master's degree student in mass communications; Katie Noll, undergraduate in secondary education; Tyler Bedell, undergraduate in business marketing; and Colby Haverkamp, undergraduate in communications studies. Andrew Wefald, assistant professor, served as the coach of the student team.

The student team won first-place honors in the graduate division through their analysis and presentation of the case "Chasing a Dream." This case focused on the issue of immigration. The student teams examined the theories of leadership that could be brought to use with this complex issue.

Faculty members involved in the conference included:

Leigh Fine, assistant professor, presented at two sessions, "Intersections of Sexuality and Leadership in College" and "Individuals as Case Studies for Expanding Leadership Scholarship."

Kerry Priest, assistant professor, presented at three panel discussions, "Contextualizing Leadership Education: A Transdiciplinary Perspective," "Narrative Approaches to Leadership Education and Development," and "Powerful Pedagogies for Undergraduate Leadership Education and Development."

Mary Tolar, director and associate professor of the Staley School of Leadership Studies, presented on "Becoming a Dean, Director, or Chair: Interactive Round-table Discussion," "The Evolution of the New York Times in Leadership," "Building Momentum Towards Leadership Education Legitimacy: A Collective Reality," and "Contemporary Issues in Leading Leadership Studies Communities: The Nexus of Faculty, Students, Curriculum and Research."
