National Safety Month, week 2: Stop slips, trips, falls

Submitted by Lisa Linck

We hope you are having fun engaging your employees in safety this June. Continue the celebration by sharing useful and helpful information on preventing slips, trips and falls.

Daily tips to share
June 10: When getting out of a vehicle, create points of contact by holding onto the door, roof or assist handle. Reduce the risk of falls in your home by adding handrails, maintaining good housekeeping and cleaning spills right when they happen.
June 11: Strong core muscles are a key component to good balance. Try doing yoga or Pilates to help improve stability and lower your risk of falling.
June 12: If you need to use a ladder, read the instructions carefully and maintain 3 points contact with it at all times.
June 13: Keep floor surfaces clean, and make sure wet floor warning signs are posted in and around wet floor areas.

Free National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ladder safety app
Falls are a continuous hazard within the workplace. This app provides real-time, interactive feedback in placing ladders at a safe, stable angle to prevent falls from occurring. Check out the app page to learn more.

Create a safer home
Adults 55 and older are more prone to falling and getting injured. Among other things, installing handrails, maintaining adequate lighting and having a slip-resistant surface in your shower or tub should be checked off your safety list. Use the home safety checklist to look for other potential hazards to prevent slips, trips and falls.
