Mathematics Colloquium lecture Feb. 13

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Laura Caravenna, University of Oxford, will present "Some Regularity Problems in Nonlinear Hyperbolic PDEs" as part of the mathematics department Colloquium lecture series at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in 122 Cardwell Hall.

The abstract for the lecture is:
Solutions to nonlinear PDEs of hyperbolic type present non-smooth behaviors. This is important for the nature of the phenomena they model, which include explosion phenomena, flows of gas and fluids in different regimes, urban traffic. I will introduce different regularity questions that arise in the area, also connected to geometrical problems. I will then give insights on the issue of SBV regularity. Measure theory provides tools flexible enough for dealing with these settings, and the proof will relate to the transport of measures related to 1-dimensional reduction arguments.
