University Distinguished Faculty Award for Mentoring of Undergraduate Students in Research

Submitted by Gail Zeak

The provost’s office is accepting nominations for the University Distinguished Faculty Award for Mentoring of Undergraduate Students in Research. The annual award honors those who exhibit excellence in faculty mentoring of undergraduate students in research.

The award is given to a faculty member at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor based upon mentoring that occurred in the previous academic year. An award of $2,500 is provided.  Eligible faculty may be nominated by K-State faculty, students, staff or administrators.

The nominations deadline is Feb. 22. Applications should be submitted electronically as a PDF to Gail Zeak at gaill@k-state.edu

Nomination criteria include evidence of:

  1. Ongoing scholarly activity by the faculty member and demonstrated support of students’ professional and scholarly development — peer-reviewed publications, presentations and other scholarly activities.
  2. Mentoring activities such as engaging students with other undergraduates, faculty, and professional organizations; scholarship support; preprofessional activities; and post-baccalaureate applications.
  3. Successful and inclusive recruitment of other faculty to mentor undergraduate researchers, including students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups.
